Asylum is the protection that a political refugee of one country is given by another country. It can also be a place that gives shelter and protection. In many cases, it is used to refer to places that house people with mental conditions. Most of the hospitals named asylums are not of the highest quality compared to other places that offer the same service. Therefore, asylum can mean political, social, and economic protection from various forces. Many times people use asylum to infer to the political state. In the healthcare industry, asylums are offering better service than they did decades ago.
Political asylum is also known as exile. People who are running away from persecution in the countries to a friendly country have practiced it for many years. Many people who seek asylum in a foreign country usually do so out of desperation and they act suddenly without prior arrangement. It is up to the discretion of the host country to accept them or reject them. Some people have been rejected by the host country and they have had to seek asylum elsewhere. These are usually people who have committed serious crimes in their respective countries.
Other people who seek asylum on humanitarian grounds are usually granted. Political exiles are common in countries that are under the rule of a tyrant. Most of the asylum seekers are escaping in fear of being murdered or imprisoned for voicing their opinions against the ruler. Due to the nature of asylums being sought, people normally do not have enough time to seek proper authorization such as visas, in some cases. The situations usually occur without any warning or prior alert. For example, refugees of a country that is experiencing war will usually be given asylum after which they might be given documentation to authorize their farther stay in the country.
Insane asylums are similar to mental hospitals but they provide poor care to their patients. They are usually like prisons to the people who suffer from mental breakdown. Many cases involve violent patients who cannot be accommodated in normal hospitals. They spend much of their time confined in cells and sometimes in strait jackets to prevent them from causing harm to themselves and the hospital staff. Mental asylums are slowly being phased out as a result of human rights campaigns against them as being inhumane. The activists are advocating proper medication and care and better rooms for the patients, such provision of padded cells.
In religious circles, asylum has also been used to refer to the area around the altar that the clergy and choir occupy during a church service. This area is normally reserved and worshippers are not supposed to venture into it. It offers a kind of barrier between the worshippers and the clergy who have a job to do without interference or distraction. Therefore, although asylum is used in several contexts, it has a central theme, which is protection. One can get asylum for any of the reasons that have been discussed.
